The DENSO North America Foundation sponsors the University of Michigan Solar Car teams, which design and build cars powered only by sunlight to compete in cross-country races. U of M’s teams have taken five national championships in nine attempts. In 2008, the University of Michigan Solar Car Team was first to cross the finish line, 10 hours ahead of its nearest competitors, for the North American Solar Challenge after traveling nearly 2,400 miles from Plano, Texas, to Calgary, Alberta.
